Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Kills Ten, Injures Over One Hundred Across Ukraine

Widespread Russian strikes caused significant civilian casualties, while the EU unveiled a new sanctions package targeting Moscow's war economy.

The day on the war

Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine on June 9, resulting in at least 10 civilian deaths and 106 injuries across seven regions. According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia fired two Kh-59/69 cruise missiles and 168 drones overnight, with 146 drones intercepted.

However, 17 drones and two missiles evaded air defenses, striking 18 locations. Kharkiv Oblast was particularly hard hit, with three people killed, including a 22-year-old pregnant woman, and 25 injured, from strikes involving Kh-59 missiles, guided aerial bombs, and drones.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, two people died and 38 were injured in 884 strikes against 46 settlements. Sumy and Kherson Oblasts also reported fatalities and numerous injuries from continued Russian attacks. Concurrently, Ukrainian forces claimed strikes on a military plant in Cheboksary, Chuvashia Republic, and the Kuibyshev oil refinery in Samara region, as well as oil infrastructure in the Vladimir region of Russia.

What: A Ukrainian drone reportedly hit and caused a fire on the roof of a museum.

Toll: Damage to a museum roof, no casualties reported.

Russia-Ukraine War

What: Russia is reportedly deploying a new generation of jet-powered strike drones with expanded range and larger warheads.

Toll: Ukraine's top military commander warned Russia aims to increase jet-powered drones to 50% of its bombing campaign.

Diplomacy & talks

Ukraine–US/European leaders. President Zelenskyy held "very positive" talks with US envoys and European leaders, expressing gratitude for their readiness to "reinvigorate diplomacy" to end the war. He also met with British, French, and German leaders in London.

Ukraine–France. Zelenskyy reported a "substantive" discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron.

UN Security Council. The US Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council, Dan Negrea, stated that the war can only end with a negotiated settlement and that the US remains ready to facilitate.

Measure: 21st sanctions package

Detail: Unveiled new measures including a freeze on the current pricing mechanism for Russian energy imports until the end of 2026, a visa ban on current and former Russian military personnel, new restrictions on crypto and financial services, and import bans on Russian fish. Over 170 proposed listings target financial, energy, and industrial sectors, including entities in third countries and 30 more vessels from Russia's 'shadow fleet'.
